National Depression Screening Day
Oct. 11 is National Depression Screening Day. Free, anonymous depression screenings will be offered between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Borders Books – 2605 S.W. Cedar Hills Blvd. in Beaverton.Individuals who attend the free screenings have the opportunity to hear an educational presentation on depression and manic-depression as well as complete a written screening test and consult one-on-one with a mental health professional. March for Peace
The Portland Coalition Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space is sponsoring a march on Oct. 13 that will mark the international day of protest. The march will protest congressional “National Missile Defense” appropriations and call on the United States government to stop the militarization of space. Without Fear
Without Fear has announced meetings dates for the remainder of the Fall term. Meetings take place in Room 229 of the Smith Memorial Center from 4 to 5 p.m. on: Oct. 15, 22, 29, Nov. 5, 19, 26 and Dec. 3. Grants awarded by Hatfield School of Government
Five public service and constitutional studies grants totaling $37,000 were recently awarded by The Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University under the Hatfield Public Service and Constitutional Studies Grant Program.

The grantees include: George Fox University, for creating a program integrating evangelicalism, politics, and public service; Blumenauer-Hatfield Gubernatorial Debates Committee, to design and operate a series of new and novel format Oregon gubernatorial debates in 2002 suggested by Congressman Earl Blumenauer; The Public Affairs and Policy Ph.D. Program, to identify and recruit students in areas such as public administration, public policy, politics, international relations, and community health who would benefit from the program at the College of Urban and Public Affairs of Portland State University; Oregon Business Council, to assist in funding the Oregon Public Performance Initiative; and The Center for Public Participation, to help develop interest and participation in civic life.
