AIDS Walk On Sunday

This Sunday, Pioneer Place will be hosting Portland’s annual AIDS walk to spread awareness and raise charity funds for the education and welfare of people who have been directly affected by AIDS or HIV.

Presented by Nike and hosted by the Cascade AIDS Project, the fundraiser is an annual event at which participants walk five kilometers, or three miles. Charity funds are raised by contributors who sponsor the walkers.

Money raised from the event will be given to youth and families who have contracted or have a high

risk of contracting AIDS or HIV, as well as outreach and educational programs on awareness and prevention. Organizers hope to raise over $300,000 at the event.

The Cascade AIDS Project is an organization dedicated to educating the public about AIDS and HIV through grassroots advocacy.

The event will also feature live entertainment, photo booths and an after-party in Pioneer Courthouse Square. The event begins on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 8:30 a.m.

Former Clinton environmental staffer speaks on campus Friday

A discussion on sustainability theories, led by an adviser for former President Clinton’s Council on Sustainable Development, will be held today at Portland State.

Gary Larsen, currently the forest supervisor of the Mt. Hood National Forest, will present his theories on social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Larsen will also speak on different worldviews about sustainability. It will “give people tools for thinking about understanding sustainability,” he said.

The lecture is the first in a series of ongoing presentations held on campus for the fourth annual Social Sustainability Colloquium at PSU, and it will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 298.
