Flu shots offered for staff, faculty today

The Public Employees Benefit Board (PEBB) is offering free flu vaccination for Portland State faculty and staff today from 1 to 5 p.m. in room 296 of Smith Memorial Student Union.

In addition to employees covered by the PEBB medical plan, dependents over the age of 12 are also eligible for shots. Those not covered by the plan can get the flu shots for $30. Contact Christine KM Lee at kl@pdx.edu with your name, department, phone and e-mail for signing up.

The flu is an infection that is caused by the influenza virus, which typically appears in two forms.

While one of the viral forms does not change much, the other can undergo rapid mutations, creating the need for the annual development of new flu vaccinations to protect against new viral strains, according to the National Health Institute medical encyclopedia.

Campus safety holds annual lost and found sale

Portland State’s Campus Public Safety Office will be selling items that have lay unclaimed on their shelves for over six months at their annual lost and found sale, starting today.

At the sale expect to find tables scattered with flash drives, calculators, umbrellas and other items that are “as random as you can imagine,” said Lee Scharich, who is coordinating the sale.

Any student who finds an item they had previously lost, they should not expect to walk away with it unless they pay like everyone else, because Campus Public Safety will not be allowing previous owners to claim the merchandise.

The sale will run through tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Native American Student and Community Center.

Class registration starts next week

Portland State students looking to register for winter term classes can do so starting as early as next week.

Graduate students can begin registering for winter term classes Nov. 5, followed by Nov. 7 for seniors (students with 135 or more credit hours completed) and Nov. 15 for juniors (at least 90 credits). Sophomores (at least 45 credits) and freshmen can register Nov. 19 and Nov. 21, respectively.

When registration times begin, students can sign up for classes online via www.banweb.pdx.edu from 8 a.m. to midnight Saturday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. Students can also visit the registration windows in the first floor lobby of Neuberger Hall between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

Course classroom numbers will be listed online, but will no longer be printed in physical copies of the PSU schedule of classes, said Kathy Coates, assistant director of scheduling. Classroom numbers will published online two weeks before winter term begins in January.
