Occupy Portland persists

Next occupation space to be determined this weekend

The Occupy Portland movement continues to promote its message, even after facing police intervention and eviction. The group, which was evicted from their Lownsdale and Chapman Squares encampment last month, now plans to occupy a new space somewhere in Portland beginning next week.

According to media releases from Occupy Portland, the general assembly approved plans to move to a new occupation space. The location is to be decided after their town hall meeting at the First Unitarian Church on 1011 SW 13th Ave. and is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 3.

The location is to be decided after their town hall meeting at the First Unitarian Church on 1011 SW 13th Ave. and is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 3.

According to minutes recorded at a Nov. 27 Spokes Council Meeting, the current plans may include the Occupy Movement renting out space at the St. Francis School as a “base of operation.”

On Nov. 29, a small group from Occupy Portland held a rally on the steps of the Justice Department in downtown Portland. The rally coincided with the trials of the group of occupiers arrested Oct. 30 in Jamison Square.

On Nov. 28, protesters lit up a downtown building with a “bat signal” that projected messages including “Regulate Wall Street,” “Prosecute Wall Street” and a list of cities involved in the Occupy movement.

The Occupy movement has garnered attention all over the nation. Most notably, students occupying University of California, Davis, were pepper sprayed during a protest in the university. Portland also faced controversy when 20-year-old Elizabeth Evon Nichols, an Occupy Portland protester, was pepper sprayed during the Nov. 17 Occupy The Banks protest.

The Dec. 3 meeting is open to all.
