Party in the Park: Don’t miss it

Every year during new student week, most of the student organizations and groups get together in the Park Blocks and have a party. Luring in freshmen, transfer students and generally people who need to get a life outside of the classroom, Party in the Park is designed to engage students in one of the 150 or so student groups and to become a part of the PSU community a bit. Plus, there is free food, a chance to win goofy prizes and the camaraderie of those who have similar interests. Here is a sample of groups that are going to be in attendance.

Math Club With the introduction of Harry Potter, the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica and the growing monolith that is the video game industry, nerds have become cool! Instead of going Greek, go geometry with insight, practice and fun while looking into the weird world of mathematics.

Global Medical TrainingTheir tagline is “Curing the world…one free clinic at a time.” This group is most beneficial for the pre-dental, pre-health students, but that shouldn’t sway away anyone who wants to lend a helping hand to those who need it most. How can you argue with that? Or, the more important question is, where can I sign up?

Pacific Islanders ClubOne of the largest groups at PSU, the PIC is a student group dynasty, cushioned with a large family support system of its members. It hosts one of the best events of the year, the spring luau.

Rollin At first I wasn’t sure what the Rollin club did, then one of the members, Isnardo Gandarilla, filled me in with this little bit: “Aggressive in-line, or rolling, is dangerous activity that is not only physically and mentally challenging, it comes with its own subculture. We would like to provide a home for current rollers and an opportunity for new people to experience the sport.” Thanks, Isnardo.

College RepublicansYou have to admire a group so adamant and passionate about their charge, even if some believe they are polishing the silver on the Titanic.

Stitch-n-BitchAwhile ago culture experts (what the criteria is, or how you become a culture expert, I don’t know) exclaimed knitting is the new yoga. Well, I am inclined to agree, because I don’t see a yoga group on the Party in the Park roster. But behold, Portland State’s own knitting club, for those of you who are so knitting inclined.

Arab-Persian Student OrganizationCelebrating the diversity of Middle Eastern history and culture the Arab-Persian Student Organization provides rich information and interaction with those who want to gain a positive experience in regard to Middle East.

Allies Against Rape CultureFormerly known as the inclusive Men Against Rape group, Allies Against Rape Culture have expanded their scope and their influence, being one of the event coordinators of events such as Take Back the Night

Badminton ClubBadminton, in my mind, is a game for royalty. Be regal and join this club that offers tips, practices and fierce competition to this game of yore.

PSU Model United NationsA relatively new club to join the arena of groups at Portland State, PSU MUN is an interactive learning event where students gather research on their member country and fight against other schools to get their goals passed. Just like the real UN but more fun!

Snowboard ClubThese people are hardcore about snowboarding. These people go up the mountain (Mount Hood) two to three times a week during snow season. That is dedication, but hey who needs homework when there is fresh powder on the hills.
