Just because you’re new to Portland State (and even if you aren’t) doesn’t mean you should wander blindly around campus, unaware of where university resources are and how to make use of them. Not to worry—here’s a handy guide to what’s around the university to make your life easier.
Campus Public Safety Office

Located at the intersection of Southwest Broadway and College Street, the Campus Public Safety Office (CPSO) keeps an eye on goings-on around campus, keeping students, faculty and staff free from harm. They also provide assistance to campus visitors, provide around-the-clock surveillance and safeguard the university facilities. If something is lost or stolen, go to the CPSO to report it. Public safety officers can also provide CPR and first aid if necessary.
Peter W. Stott Recreation Center

The Stott Center is the hub for campus recreation. Located next to the Millar Library, across from Shattuck Hall in the South Park Blocks, the Stott Center features two gyms, the aquatic and climbing center, fitness areas and multi-purpose rooms. Use of the Stott Center is free for all students, and use of the pool and locker room can be purchased for $24 per term. Open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

PSU’s Center for Student Health and Counseling is the place to go when your health goes south. In addition to medical services, the health center offers some dental service, a pharmacy and counseling. All students who take nine or more credit hours at PSU are charged a health services fee that provides basic health care coverage.

The Children’s Center, located in the middle of campus at the Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 126, provides on-campus daycare services. The Helen Gordon Child Development Center, located at1609 S.W. 12th Ave., offers partial- and full-day preschool as well as kindergarten.

The Office of Information Technology is in charge of several on-campus computer labs available to students. This office is where students can set up their ODIN account and find information about any technology-related issues. There are labs located in the basement and fourth floor of Neuberger Hall (724 S.W. Harrison St.), the Millar Library (1875 S.W. Park Ave.), Cramer Hall (1721 S.W. Broadway) and the second floor of the Broadway Housing Building (625 S.W. Jackson St.)

The Undergraduate Academic Support Center (UASC) is the place to go for academic advising concerning university requirements. The UASC also provides academic support and acts as a guide to academic resources. The UASC includes an advising center for general academic advising; community college relations to assist transfer students from community colleges; the Disability Resource Center; student athlete advising; veteran services; and the academic support program, which provides extra aid to students struggling academically.

The Ombuds Office “provide[s] an informal means of problem resolution if you have a university-related dispute,” according to its website. The Ombuds acts as a source of information for a wide variety of issues that may occur between students and the university. Potential conflicts involving grading policies, syllabus content, academic requirements, harassment and cultural misunderstandings can be resolved with assistance from the Ombuds.

The Career Center offers job and internship resources, organizes career fairs and provides individual career counseling. Student Legal Services has two full-time attorneys on staff to assist students with a variety of legal issues. Consultations are free of charge, though court fees are not covered by the university. Although walk-in consultations are available, it is advisable to schedule an appointment. Conflicts concerning the university or its staff cannot be handled by legal services due to a conflict of interest. The Ombuds Office is recommended for settling university-related conflicts. Transportation and Parking is where to buy parking passes, and they have several service windows located in Neuberger Hall (open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) TriMet FlexPasses and student ID cards can be purchased or replaced here. Students can also pick up mass transit passes, tickets and get trip planning assistance at the Transportation Information Center in Urban Center Plaza. The plaza is located at Southwest Sixth Avenue and Montgomery Street.
