PSU President wins ‘international leadership’ award

President Daniel O. Bernstine has won the 2005 Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award, an honor given in part for his efforts to expand the PSU study abroad program and increase the admission rates of international students.

Bernstine was picked among 30 candidates. The award, established in 2000, is given by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges’ Commission on International Programs to those who have worked to enhance international education in public institutions. A ceremony will be held this summer in Rhode Island.

Since beginning his presidency in 1997, Bernstine has led an “Internationalizaion Initiative” at PSU, which has increased both international student enrollment at PSU and provided more study abroad programs to PSU students.

Since 1999, Portland State has experienced a nearly 50 percent increase in international enrollment. More than 1,100 international students from 94 countries currently attend PSU. The university also provides over 135 study abroad programs in 38 countries.
