Following suit with what has become a recent trend for teams in the South Park Blocks, the Portland State men’s Soccer Club will compete for a league title tonight.
The Portland State squad plays fellow Greater Portland Soccer District (GPSD) First Division team the Sinnotts for the league crown on Delta Park’s field three at 7 p.m., tonight.
If Portland State reigns victorious in the championship game, it will have an opportunity to move into a more competitive division, the GPSD’s Premier Division, for next year’s spring season.
“It’s something we’ve been shooting for and now we can make it,” said team coordinator Petter Dahlgren of the chance to move divisions. “The division we play in now is alright, but we want to be in a division where we have to fight for wins.”
The team is made up of about 25 Portland State students, and has six wins, two loses and one tie on the season.
Due to the fact that one of the losses was a forfeit, the only Portland State loss came at the hands of the Sinnotts earlier this season. However, Portland State also defeated the Sinnotts 5-1 in the first contest between the two teams.
Dahlgren, who plays defender, said this season has been one of turnaround for Portland State, and he feels winning the championship match is within reach for the budding squad.
“I think we have a strong team and will put up a good fight,” Dahlgren said, who predicts a 3-2 victory for Portland State.
