Putting the season away
It was a mixed weekend for Portland State tennis. The Vikings’ men’s and women’s teams went into the weekend not having won a conference game in 2012. In the end, the women’s team came away with its first conference win.
The women’s tennis team won its home game against Weber State at Club Green Meadows on Friday 4-3, but lost 6-1 to Northern Arizona on Saturday. The men’s team also played Northern Arizona on Saturday and lost with a similar 6-1 scoreline.
With these results, the women’s team improved to 4-15 overall for the season and 1-7 in the Big Sky Conference. The men’s team, meanwhile, finished 2012 with a 2-17 overall record (0-8 conference).
The women started Friday’s game with a clash of doubles matches. They were able to pull off two of three victories, earning the doubles point and starting the day off on the right foot.
Freshman Ashley Spencer and senior Marti Pellicano narrowly defeated Weber State’s Brittiny Moore and Ashley Tanner 9-7. Freshman Megan Govi and sophomore Marina Todd won their match with a close 8-6 scoreline, and freshman Alexa McDonald and junior Nayanatara Vadali lost their game 8-5.
In singles competition, the Vikings split the six matches 3-3 with Weber State which meant that they took the contest with a 4-3 overall score. Pellicano, Govi and Todd won their singles encounters.
Saturday’s results were not as good for Portland State. The women’s team lost the opening doubles match 2-1.
In the singles, Todd was the only Viking player to win her match. She defeated Northern Arizona’s Alice Pacaut in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3). Overall, Northern Arizona clinched the duel 6-1.
The men’s team faced a different set of problems, with similar results. The team’s number one singles player, sophomore Roman Margoulis, injured his back during training last week and had to sit the game out on the sidelines. The Vikings lost three doubles matches to start the day.
In the singles, junior Mitch Somach was the only Portland State player to win his match. Playing at number one for the first time, he defeated Northern Arizona’s Robin Pezzutto in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. When the dust settled, Northern Arizona came up trumps 6-1.
