The Red and Black Caf퀌, in typical East Portland fashion, is a community-oriented gathering place that is collectively owned and operated. Host to a variety of events such as music, poetry slams, open mic nights and art exhibitions, the Red and Black is a relatively new comer to the Portland scene. In its three years, however, it has managed to secure a niche for itself, and thrive on the corner of 22nd and S.E. Division. As a caf퀌, the Red and Black is obligated to serve up food and drink, and it does so with organic gusto. Many of the selections are vegetarian or vegan in nature, and range from traditional (but good) coffee to pasta and a range of earth- and tongue-friendly options in between. Beer and wine are also served.

As far as musical selection goes, the Red and Black offers local talent at low prices. Most shows are in the $3-6 dollar range, and past patrons have included the Gossip, Nice Nice and the psychedelicious Pom Pom Meltdown. All ages are welcome, of course, and the environment is all that one would expect from an establishment of its type: warm, comfortable, and friendly. So don’t be shy – the Red and Black is waiting with open arms laden with local music, art and victuals. In the words of John Lennon, don’t let them down.
