The Portland State softball team (22-35, 7-11 Western Athletic Conference), stole a game from No. 14 Oregon State before splitting one doubleheader and sweeping another against Tulsa.
Thanks to a superb showing by WAC Pitcher of the Week Morgan Seibert (16-19), the Vikings took three of four from their WAC rival, securing at least a fourth place conference finish, and one of three from the 14th best team in the nation.
Seibert leads the WAC in strikeouts with 203. She is only the second Viking to ever break the 200 mark in a season. Last week, she earned three wins in four decisions while maintaining a 0.88 ERA, striking out 24 and only walking two. This is the second time this season and the third time in her career that Seibert has been named Pitcher of the Week.
Sunday, Seibert pitched 11 innings of two-hit ball to win the game for the Vikings, 2-1. Senior Gina Papasadero nailed a one-out, game winning base hit to score Vanessa Applegate in the bottom of the 11th.
Game two featured Viking dominance at the plate as well as on the mound. Starter Nichole Ivie gave up seven hits and one walk, but allowed no runs. The Viking offense managed to stay awake just long enough to score six runs on nine hits and eventually win the game 6-0.
The day before, Seibert threw another two-hitter, and the Vikings eked out just enough offense to beat Tulsa 1-0 in game one of that doubleheader.
Ivie gave up six runs in the second game and the Vikings lost 6-1.
Earlier in the week, the Vikings played a doubleheader and a makeup game against the No. 14 Oregon State Beavers.
In the first game, Seibert absolutely owned the Beavers, giving up four hits and two walks in seven innings while striking out eight. Papasadero hit a triple in the second and scored on an error, giving the Vikings a narrow 1-0 lead that Seibert never relinquished.
In game two, the tables were turned as Portland State was no-hit, 8-0. Ivie took the loss, giving up eight runs on 15 hits.
The next day, in the make-up game, the Vikings held a 2-1 lead in the fourth, but gave up runs in each of the last three innings to drop the game, 4-2.
Portland State will travel to Oregon on May 9 and will close out the season against WAC opponent San Jose State in California on May 12.
