Coaches pick PSU football third

Big Sky coaches picked the Vikings to finish third in the conference Monday in Park City, UT at the Big Sky Media event. In 2004 the Viks fought their way to a 7-4 finish and barely missed the playoffs. Head Coach Tim Walsh and senior linebacker Joey King represented Portland State at the event.

Three PSU golfers selected as All-American Scholars

Portland State’s Big Sky champ golf team garnered three All-American Scholar nods. Junior Danielle Reilly, sophomore Ashley Anast and freshman Haley Brown were selected to the team, which is composed of 199 players in D-1 golf. To qualify for the honor, players must possess a 3.5 GPA and must compete in 66 percent of all rounds during the year.

PSU golfers compete at Amateur Public Links

Portland State golf coach Felicia Johnston and former player Sarah Tiller competed in the Amateur Public Links Championship last week. Both players qualified earlier this year and both players advanced through stroke play and into match play. Match play proved difficult, with Johnston falling to 16-year-old Angela Park and Tiller losing to Marina Choi.

Baseball pennant races heating up

After winning three of four in Boston, the New York Yankees are putting pressure on the defending champs in what promises to be the most entertaining pennant race this season. In a talent laden AL East, the Red Sox, the Baltimore Orioles and the Yanks are all contending and are within games of each other. Look for personnel moves via trade before the trade deadline.

Brown out as coach of Pistons

Larry Brown is in the process of resigning as head coach of the Detroit Pistons Monday, pending a buyout of his contract that still has 3 years and $18 million left on it. Brown spent two seasons in the Motor City, winning the NBA Championship in 2004 and getting back to the Finals in 2005 only to lose to the San Antonio Spurs in seven games. Former Minnesota Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders is the leading candidate to replace Brown.
