SOFTBALL
Vikings sign four players to National Letters of Intent
Portland State softball coach Teri Mariani announced the signing of four players to National Letters of Intent.
Kayla Lewis, Kara Ray, Whitney Olsen and Alayna Petersen are the signees for the 2002 PSU softball team.
Lewis comes to PSU from Churchill High School in Eugene, Ore. “Kayla is an outstanding offensive player who can hit for power,” Mariani said. Ray is a senior infielder for Crater High School in Central Point, Ore. Last year Ray earned first team all-conference, second team all-state honors in softball, and was the conference champion and second in state as a skier.
“Kara will bring a lot of versatility to our team,” Mariani said. “She is a great shortstop and outfielder and adds another quick lefty at the plate.” Local standout Olsen hails from Beaverton, Ore.
“Whitney is an extremely quick lefty hitter and a very aggressive defensive outfielder,” Mariani said.
The most experienced recruit of the four is first baseman Petersen. She is currently a freshman at North Idaho College and ranks among the Scenic West Athletic Conference leaders in home runs, doubles and RBIs.
“Alayna is a great hitter for power and a good defensive player at first base,” Mariani said. “She has a strong knowledge of the game.”
