Say goodbye to T.O.

The Philadelphia Eagles suspended their expensive star wideout Terrell Owens for the rest of the season Monday following Owens’ outburst on ESPN, after the team failed to recognize his 100th career touchdown, and his Wednesday fracas in the locker room. The move will most likely end Owens’ tenure with the Eagles, which has been marred by a poor relationship with quarterback Donovan McNabb. After last year’s Super Bowl Owens’ accused McNabb of “tiring” late in the game, and more recently claimed that the Eagles would be a better team with Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. McNabb has been fighting through a sports hernia, among other injuries and has appeared hobbled at times this year. In other Eagles news, disgruntled running back Brian Westbrook signed a five-year extension to stay with the team. The deal is reportedly worth $25 million.

Rookies of the year

Oakland Athletics closer Huston Street won the AL Rookie of the Year Award, the AP reported. Street went 5-1 with 23 saves in 2005 with a 1.72 ERA. He held opponents to a .194 batting average and is the second Athletics player to win the ROY in a row. Shortstop Bobby Crosby won the award last year. The NL Rookie of the Year Award went to Phillies slugger Ryan Howard. Howard led all rookies with 22 homers and batted in 63 runs in just 88 games. With his power and .288 batting average Howard was a big part of the Phillies push for the postseason. Other contenders for the AL ROY included Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and Tampa Bay Devil Rays DH Jonny Gomes. Also-rans in the NL race included Astros outfielder Willy Taveras and Atlanta Braves star rookie Jeff Francouer.
