ATHENS, Greece (AP) – The boyfriend of a Greek judochampion who fell from a third-floor balcony jumped from the samespot and was also critically injured.

Giorgos Chrisostomides, 24, was on life-support in the intensivecare unit of Athens’ Evangelismos hospital with injuries to thehead and back after jumping from his girlfriend’s apartment, policesaid.

Eleni Ioannou, 20, was in critical condition at another Athenshospital after she fell from the balcony Saturday following anargument with Chrisostomides.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) -Two players on the Greek Olympicbaseball team tested positive for banned substances.

Andrew James Brack and Derek Nicholson, both U.S.-born Greekcitizens, tested positive in samples taken Aug. 5, the GreekOlympic Committee said.

Brack tested positive for the steroid stanozolol, whileNicholson, an alternate on the team, tested positive for diuretics,officials said.

BASEBALL

SEATTLE (AP) – Two-time AL batting champion EdgarMartinez announced that he will retire at the end of the season,ending his 18-year career with the Seattle Mariners as one ofbaseball’s greatest designated hitters.

Martinez, 41, was a seven-time All-Star. He batted over .300 in10 seasons, and led the league in hitting in 1992 and 1995.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Trying to bolster a rotation depletedby injuries, the Philadelphia Phillies acquired starting pitcherCory Lidle from the Cincinnati Reds for two minor leaguers and aplayer to be named.

Lidle, who is 7-10 with a 5.32 ERA in 24 starts, will step intoan inconsistent rotation that had been missing Kevin Millwood andVicente Padilla. Lidle is tied for second in the NL with threecomplete games, and he led the Reds with 149 innings pitched.

Cincinnati obtained Class-A outfielder Javon Moran andleft-handed pitcher Joe Wilson in the trade.

BASKETBALL

HOUSTON (AP) – The Houston Rockets signed free agentguards Charlie Ward and Bob Sura.

The Rockets are in need of a new point guard after Steve Franciswas traded to the Orlando Magic in a seven-player deal that senttwo-time league scoring champ Tracy McGrady to Houston.

Ward, a 10-year NBA veteran, spent most of his career with theNew York Knicks. He will be reunited with Rockets coach Jeff VanGundy, who led the Knicks from 1995 to 2001.

Sura, a nine-year veteran who can play either guard spot,started his career with Cleveland before moving on to Golden State,Detroit and Atlanta.

TENNIS

SOPOT, Poland (AP) – Second-seeded Nikolay Davydenko ofRussia and fifth-seeded Alberto Martin of Spain lost in the firstround of the Prokom Open.

Chile’s Adrian Garcia defeated Davydenko 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 inthe clay-court tournament. Argentina’s Juan Monaco beat Martin 6-7(13), 7-5, 6-3.
