Junior Andre Murray is an example of something rarely seen these days on the basketball court: a complete player.
Murray, a 6-foot-2 guard from Los Angeles, does it all. He can defend, rebound, hit the three-pointer, find the open man, get to the rim or pull up and drain mid-range jumpers all day.
Murray’s abilities were on display last Saturday as the Vikings defeated Northern Colorado 85-83 behind Murray’s 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. In six Big Sky games, he is leading the team in scoring at 12.3 point per game, and is third in rebounding at 5.7 per game.
The Vanguard recently tracked down the Vikings’ complete two-guard.
Why did you come to Portland State?vOn my recruiting trip, the coaching staff treated me really well and made me feel like I was part of a family, like this was a home away from home.
What’s your best moment on the court? Probably senior night in high school. It was special because my whole family was there, especially my grandma because she didn’t get out much. But she made it to my last game.
If you could change one rule about basketball, what would it be? Probably the carrying call. I’d like to be able to get wild with the ball every once in awhile and dazzle the fans.
What’s your favorite place to eat around campus? Quiznos.
Do you have any unique training methods? Just sleep. I love sleeping a lot and visualizing what I’m going to do in a game.
What was the last thing you cooked? Hamburger Helper. It was pretty good.
What’s your favorite thing to cook for the lady friends? Chicken parmesan. It usually goes over pretty well.
Who’s the funniest person on the team? There’s a lot of funny guys, but probably Brian Curtis. He’s a character, definitely one of the funniest on the team.
What’s the funniest thing that has happened in practice this year?Oh man, definitely when coach [Bone] was yelling at [Alex Tiefenthaler] and called him “Bro.” He said something like “Get on the line, bro.” And I started laughing right away. It was really funny.
