Daily Vanguard: Why did you come to Portland State?
Stephanie Johns:
I went to Nevada [freshman year] and didn’t get along with the coach. So I just moved home and went to school for a year [Southern Oregon]. Kinda relaxed and didn’t do golf, didn’t do anything, but I had gotten recruited by Portland State out of high school and came up here for a recruiting trip and really, really liked it. Plus, I’m a business major and they have a really good program here.

DV: If you could change one thing about your sport, what would that be?
SJ:
[The perception] that it’s such a guy’s sport. I’ll show up to a golf course and [the guys are] just like, “Oh God, this chick doesn’t know what she’s doing.” Then they see me swing the club and they’re like, “Oh OK, you do know what you’re talking about.”

DV: What has been your favorite class at Portland State?
SJ:
Actually, the class I’m in right now. It’s Human Resource Management. It’s so much fun and I’m really enjoying it.

DV: Where is your favorite place to eat around campus?
SJ:
I actually really like Paccini’s. I just kinda like sitting there and chillin’.

DV: What is your favorite thing to do around Portland?
SJ:
In the winter I snowboard a lot. I kinda grew up doing that and really enjoy it.

DV: If you could attend one concert or sporting event anywhere, what would it be?
SJ:
I would want to go to the Master’s [Golf Tournament] or the Super Bowl.

DV: What’s on your iPod right now?
SJ:
I actually listen to a lot of country.

DV: If you could have dinner with any three people, who would they be?
SJ:
Tiger Woods, Rob Drydrek and … Paul Walker. Yeah, Paul Walker.

DV: What is the best golf course in Oregon?
SJ:
Bandon Dunes is beautiful. That’s the most beautiful one in Oregon. It’s right on the ocean.

DV: Do you read the Vanguard?
SJ:
Yes! I read it at times.
