As the term comes to a close, Viking sports are wrapping upanother solid season of spring sports. Viking women’s softball,women’s golf, track, and wrestling are all ending the 2004 springseasons on positive notes with some members from each teamexcelling with excellent scores, times, marks, and awards.
Viking Erin Stokey, a senior infielder for the women’ssoftball team, was named to the 2004 Pacific All-Region team. Notonly is this an incredible individual success for Stokey, it isonly the second time in PSU school history that a softball playerwas so honored. Stokey batted .275 in 55 games this season, and ledthe team in doubles (9), runs (22) and RBIs (27).
Senior Zac Enoch has been equally impressive on this year’swrestling team. On May 21-23, Enoch went 0-2 in the 121-poundweight class at the Olympic Team Trials. Enoch was competing forone of the six men’s greco-roman spots on the U.S Olympic Team.Portland State has a total of six former wrestlers who havecompeted for the U.S Olympics. Former Viking, Rick Sanders was the1969 World Champion and a five-time National Champion. Sander isthe only former Viking wrestler to become a U.S Olympianmedalist.
Every year athletes from the Big Sky Conference schools nominateand award student athletes for the Big Sky Conference ScholarAthlete Award. This is based on athletic and academic performanceduring the academic year.
To qualify for the award, student athletes must have completedat least two years of intercollegiate competition at theirrespective institution, must be a be a letter winner and a memberof the graduating class and/or have completed their last year ofintercollegiate athletic eligibility. All these accomplishments areexpected to have been done while holding a grade point average of3.2 (on a 4.0 scale).
This year, seniors Evan Garich and Rebecca Randolph werePortland State’s honorees. Garich is a distance runner for the PSUmen’s track team, and Randolph is a star golfer on the PSU women’sgolf team.
