Student discounts shape up

Summer is a great season for people to get on that training program for getting back into shape. It is also a time for local gyms to offer great deals to students who want to work out with their spare time.

The most logical choice before any of the commercial membership-required gyms would be the Peter W. Stott Center, which offers a full workout room and all the weight training equipment one needs. Right next door to that room is the circuit room for an aerobic workout. And of course, there is the pool, basketball courts and racquetball courts to provide a wide range of activities. Any student with a valid ID card can access facilities in the Stott Center.

The best offer from any local gym is Bally Total Fitness, with the closest location near campus on 110 S.W. Yamhill. Bally offers an unbeatable four-month membership plan for $144 or $36 per month for four months. The plan is available to anyone with a valid student ID card between the ages of 18-25. After this four-month period has ended, the monthly fee goes even lower. The fee drops down to $24 per month and that membership can be renewed forever. Bally offers a full workout area, group exercise classes and customized personal training as well. For more information call 503-223-0088.

The next best deal is 24-Hour Fitness, located throughout the Portland area including 1400 S.W. Fifth. The gym has a three-month introductory membership deal offered for $127. Depending on which club, there are various facilities and activities offered through 24-Hour Fitness. They have a full workout area, with weights and aerobic equipment. They also have a swimming pool, hot tub, steam room and sauna. There are classes available and customized personal training. For additional information call 503-224-2233.

Another option for those outside the downtown area might be Club Sport Oregon located at 18120 S.W. Lower Boones Ferry Rd. With a wider range of facilities all in one club, the cost is wider as well. Membership starts at $95 per month. Club Sport has everything from the full workout area with weights, to aerobic equipment, four racquetball courts, two squash courts, basketball courts and two swimming pools. There are classes offered in all areas, a restaurant, personal trainers, chiropractors and masseuses to help the body through those hard workout days. For more information call 503- 968-4500.
