It’s been only a few weeks since the SUPERTRASH film festival in Portland, that tasteful showing of films like Robocop 2, Roadhouse and Big Trouble in Little China. You know, classic cinema.
Now before you have a chance to regain your sanity after sitting through hours of SUPERTRASH, Night Gallery and Floating World Comics are once again presenting a film festival aimed at people who can’t get enough garbage in their lives.
It’s called Deep Cult and it begins today at the Laurelhurst Theater with one movie showing every few days until Feb. 28.
Don’t expect showings of relatively mainstream films like in SUPERTRASH. The films for Deep Cult range from the obscure and awkward-sounding Impulse, starring William Shatner as a paranoid gigolo murderer, to the “How have I never heard of this?” Inframan, a 1975 Hong Kong robot superhero film from the Shaw Brothers. Rounding out the showings are the high school murder extravaganza Massacre at Central High and a film that sounds like it could be the queen of trashy sex films, Confessions of a Bad Girl.
You might be thinking two things right now:
1. Why would I sit through movies I know will suck?
2. Where can I buy tickets?
If you asked the first question, then there is nothing that will get you to check out the festival. If you asked the second, you already know the joy of watching pure film garbage and the feeling of sharing inside jokes and catchphrases with your friends about movies most have never heard of and never will.
There will be raw feeling to all these films, said Jason Leivian, owner of Floating World Comics, who helped plan Deep Cult. SUPERTRASH was a huge success with the masses of Portland, he said, but this festival will have a different feel–aimed more toward the hardcore cult film fanatics.
“Anyone who is interested in cult movies in general is already someone who is into exploring and finding new things. So I would say the deeper the better,” he said.
