CINEMA 21
616 N.W. 21st Ave. 503-223-4515
"The Third Man" 7, also 2:15 Sat.-Sun.
This classic film starring Orson Welles ("Transformers: The Movie") is bound to provide you with at least a year’s worth of bar/first date material helping you appear more cultured. Careful, though: This only works on people who are not all that cultured. Dropping "The Third Man" on a Reed graduate will always make you look like a boob.
"A Tale of Two Sisters" 8:55, also 10:55 Fri.- Sat., 4:30 Sat.-Sun.
Here’s another Asian horror film, which people are finding hugely entertaining these days. This one has twin adolescent girls who decide to juggle coming of age with being creepy. Springtime, a ring-a-ding-ding time!
CINEMAGIC
2021 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd. 503-231-7919
"Ray" 5:30, 8:15
CLINTON ST. THEATER
2522 S.E. Clinton St. 238-8899
"A Clockwork Orange" 7, 9:30, also 4, Sat. Sun.
Though a bit more forgiving than "The Third Man," you still need to be careful about whom you talk to about "A Clockwork Orange." If you must discuss Kubrick, however, I’d go for "2001: A Space Odyssey," since geeky is still in. Steer well clear of "Tron," though. I swear, that movie has killed more conversations…
FIFTH AVENUE CINEMA
525 S.W. Fifth Ave. 503-725-4470
"Kagemusha" 7, 9:15 Fri, Sat
Akira Kurosawa’s 1980 epic tells the story of a thief’s turbulent attempt to impersonate an emperor. Bush administration anyone?
GUILD THEATRE
829 S.W. 9th Ave. 503-221-1156
"Bodysong" 7 Sat., 5 Sun.
Apparently the only important thing about this film is that it’s scored by Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, because I’ll be damned if I can find anything more about it. So instead I’ll say something snotty: Bodysong is a stupid title. It makes me think of farts.
"Texas Tenor: The Illinois Jacquet Story" 7 Sun.
Documentary about Illinois Jacquet, a terminally disoriented Texas tenor saxophonist.
MORELAND THEATER
6712 S.E. Milwaukie Ave. 503-236-5257
"Sideways" 5:30, 8:05
This is the film to go to if you want to see hand jobs in the audience. Take a date and maybe you could get one!
ROSEWAY THEATRE
7229 N.E. Sandy Blvd. 503-287-8119
"The Aviator" 7:20
I hear Cate Blanchett does a bang-up Katharine Hepburn, but she’ll always be Galadriel to me. Galadriel, fair queen of the Elves, lull me by thine sweet nectar, and I shall while away my evenings to Elven song and tales of yore. Pray! Don’t wake me to dawn’s dull light! For I shall know then that my Elven dreams have gone.
WHITSELL AUDITORIUM
1219 S.W. Park Ave. 503-221-1156
"Monster Road" 7 Fri.
A film about Bruce Bickford, psychedelic animator and Frank Zappa collaborator. Why do people insist on making trippy movies? Don’t they know my shit’s tripped out enough? Oh fuck! Dude, what was that? No, seriously, that was fucked up. What the hell was that? Oooh, shit…
"Different Drummer: Elvin Jones" 7 Fri.
A tribute to Elvin Jones, hugely influential drummer and member of John Coltrane’s quartet. Jazz continues to be the No. 1 cause of relatively bright people feeling stupid, and relatively stupid people feeling bright. Fascinating.
"Music From the Inside Out" 7 Sat., 5 Sun.
The magic of music, told (through song, probably) by the Philadelphia Orchestra.
"Caballe: Beyond the Music" 7 Sun.
Another journey through music! Egads, wouldn’t a set of headphones, an ounce of liberty caps and a pair of 3-D glasses do the same thing?
