Tonight: Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks

Until now, it seemed that Myspace had no redeeming social value. But with the news that the morally ambiguous and uncomfortably corporate Web site will be sponsoring a free “secret” concert by Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks tonight at the Satyricon, they may have redeemed themselves. Well, maybe not.

But with the news that the morally ambiguous and uncomfortably corporate Web site will be sponsoring a free “secret” concert by Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks tonight at the Satyricon, they may have redeemed themselves. Well, maybe not.

There may be some dispute amongst you casual hipsters, but Malkmus might just be the most talented songwriter to call Portland their home.

The former Pavement leader’s solo career has never quite reached the artistic heights of his old band, but he has come damn close. Music snobs are still holding out for the Holy Grail of alternative rock reunions, a Pavement reconciliation, but with the always-entertaining inner-band squabbles, it looks highly unlikely. Checking out Malkmus and The Jicks is the best you’ll get, and it’s not a bad consolation.

Malkmus is currently promoting his band’s latest album, Real Emotional Trash, an impressive collection of head-bobbing grooves, inspired guitar fuzz freak-outs and clever Beatles-like wordplay. He hasn’t sounded this “on” since 2003’s Pig Lib.

The show is free, but there are a couple of hoops you’ll have to jump through to see it. You’ll need a wristband that you can pick up at Music Millennium (3158 E. Burnside) today from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. It’s still possible to get a wristband when the doors open, but since the show will be packed, it is unlikely you’ll get in if you arrive at the normal door times.

If you aren’t yet a Malkmus fan, do yourself a favor and check out the show. The man’s an indie rock legend for a reason.
