Several visiting professors at Portland State University this summer are participating in the “Tour the World at Home” lecture series sponsored by the Office of International Affairs, School of Extended Studies’ Summer Session and the Multicultural Center.
The series, which showcases professors on campus to teach during the 2003 PSU Summer Session, is open to the public, and all lectures are free of charge. Running from July 2 to Aug. 6, the talks will be held in the Multicultural Center in the Smith Memorial Student Union from noon to 1 pm.
Wednesday, July 2: “The Russian Economy at the Crossroads: Between the Past and Unpredictable Future,” Irina Bolko (Russia)
Raised and educated in the eastern area of the former Soviet Union, Bolko specializes in economic growth and the dissemination of technology, having received her Ph.D. from the St. Petersburg State University for Economy and Finance.
Wednesday, July 9: “The Germans and Their Cars,” Ingo Klein (Germany)
A specialist in economic development, Klein serves as a lecturer to the Stanford overseas program in Berlin, and is a partner in a Berlin consulting company where he directs international business development projects.
Wednesday, July 16: “Understanding a Different Culture: The Russian Mentality,” Vladimir Tikhonov (Russia)
Currently servings as vice president for Graduate Studies and Research at the Nizhny Novgorod Linguistic University, Tikhonov earned his Ph.D. in philology from the State University of Odessa.
Wednesday, July 23: “French Cinema 1960-1980: Marginal Heroes and Fortuitous Heroes,” Jean-Luc Tendil (France)
Pursuing research on the American author Jack London, Tendil earned his doctoral degree in literature and American civilization and now teaches English at the University of Avignon.
Wednesday, July 30: “Profile and Development of the Portential Markets in Mexico: Let’s Do Business With Them,” Marco Pollo Tollo Velasco (Mexico)
Wednesday, August 6: “Italy: The Making of the World’s Most Beautiful Landscape,” Mauro Agnoletti (Italy)
Well known for his work regarding the history of landscape conservation, Agnoletti is a professor in the department of forestry and environmental science at the University of Florence.
