The PSU library was evacuated today around 11:15 a.m. after the Portland Police were informed of a possible device that was set to go off at noon.
After the threat was received, the library was instantly evacuated by campus safety, the area was taped off, and messages were sent out through PSU Alert, the campus emergency notification system implemented this term. Nothing was found and as of 1 p.m. nothing more had happened.
The library will stay closed until at least 4 p.m. No more information is known about the possible “device.”
Some students said they were annoyed they could not get into the Branford P. Millar library to study for midterms.
PSU student Yasmine Najmabadi said she was trying to get inside to use the computer lab, but could not, and another person who had a bike chained up in the taped off area spoke loudly at an officer because he would not let her in to retrieve it.
This is the third reported threat this school year. The latest was a bomb threat note found in a men’s restroom on Feb. 22 that shut down Neuberger Hall. In October a bomb threat note was found which raised concerns by some at the university because Campus Public Safety did not evacuate any buildings.
Concepcion Villarreal, a student at PSU, was working on a midterm in the library when around 11:30 a.m. she said a message was broadcast over the intercom asking everyone to leave the library in a calm and orderly manner. She said the evacuation process went smoothly and everyone seemed calm as officers moved students away from the building to the other side of the Park Blocks.
According to Campus Public Safety Chief Michael Soto, the anonymous threat was originally called in to local television station KATU who proceeded to inform the police, who in turn told Campus Public Safety of the threat.
