Portland State football received preseason honors this past week, with quarterback Juston Wood being named to The Sports Network 2002 Pre-Season All-American second team. Last season Wood lead the Big Sky Conference in passing yards, total offense and passing efficiency. He was also ranked in the top 10 of all three categories. Last season Wood threw for 3,200 yards and 23 touchdowns, with only five interceptions.
Taking the first team selection as quarterback was Tony Romo from Eastern Illinois. He is a two-time Walter Payton Award finalists (1-AA Player of the Year). Romo threw for 2,068 yards last season and had 21 touchdowns, with six interceptions.
Also up for some preseason props is sophomore running back Ryan Fuqua. Lindy’s College Football Preview listed Fuqua as the 2002 Preseason I-AA Offensive player of the year. Last year Fuqua rushed for a monster 1,586 yards, setting a new freshman record. All his yards came in the final eight games of the season; a season which he averaged a nation leading 7.6 yards a carry.
