After an undefeated weekend to start the season, the Vikings will take a 2-0 record into Eugene this Sunday against the Oregon Ducks (1-0).

Portland State comes into the game undefeated with opening season home wins under their belt against University of California, Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara this past weekend. The Vikings were led by last season’s Big Sky MVP, junior guard Eryn Jones, who averaged 19.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists last week.

In the game against Santa Barbara, Jones became only the 15th player to score 1,000 points in Portland State history, an achievement that helped her earn the first Big Sky Conference Player of the Week award this season. This is the third time Jones has taken home the honor.

The Vikings have been hot from the field to start the season. In two games, the team is shooting 52-124 from the field (.419 percent) and 15-32 from the three-point line (.469 percent). Junior guard Courtney VanBrocklin is a perfect 2-2 from the field and 8-8 from the free throw line this season. Van Brocklin is second on the team in scoring, averaging 18 points, three assists and 2 rebounds.

Junior Karley Lampman has been solid all-around, averaging 13.5 points, five rebounds and 2.5 assists. Lampman’s play was key in sparking the Vikings victories last week, as she’s currently leading the team with three steals per game.

“We’ve made some great strides defensively,” head coach Sherri Murrell said. “We know how to win even when teams make runs.”

The Vikings will have their hands full against a high-scoring Ducks team at Matthew Knight Arena. In their first season at Mathew Knight last year, the Ducks finished with a 1-6 record at home, but they look to be much improved. It will also be the Vikings first trip to the arena.

“We’re still getting used to our roles,” Jones said. “But we can always work on our defense.”

Tip off against the Ducks is scheduled for 7 p.m. this Sunday at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene.
