Vikings looking to sink a win
The Portland State men’s golf team returns home after finishing 13th at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate in Brighton, Col.
In all, 15 teams competed in the 7,067 yard, par 72 tournament three of which were Big Sky schools.
Portland State squared off against the two other Big Sky schools, Idaho State and Weber State. The Vikings were able to hold off Idaho only to lose to Weber.
Leading the Vikings in the first round of play was senior Brodie Jordan who went on to finish 40th out of 81 golfers.
Jordan’s amazing first round score of 67 gained him a new career low. Unfortunately, Jordan lost his touch in the second and third rounds, finishing the day 67-81-78=226.
The overall winner at the tournament was Miguel Griego hailing from Oral Roberts. Griego shot consistently with scores of 71-68-67=206.
Other Portland State golfers who competed were Doug Nelson, 77-75-73=225 (39th), Jeff Dooley, 76-76-75=227 (45 tie), Tyler Daniels, 81-76-76=233 (65 t), and Matt Logan, 79-80-85=244, (77).
Next week the Vikings will once again hit the road to Simi Valley, Calif. for the Countrywide Home Loans Intercollegiate hosted by Cal State Northridge Oct. 15 and 16.
The women’s golf squad didn’t fare much better than the men at the Lady Vandal Fall Classic.
The Vikings placed 15th in the 16-team classic shooting 338-338-330=1,006 over the 54-hole event played at the University of Idaho Golf Club. Idaho won the event with 297-299-302=898.
Freshman Sarah Tiller led the team with remarkable consistency shooting 81-81-80=242 over the 6,107 yard, par 72 course. She was PSU’s best finisher tying for 34th among 90 golfers.
Kim Welch of Washington State won the event 79-73-69=221.
Lisa Zimmer shot the low round for the Vikings during the tournament with a 78 in the final round. She and fellow Viking Bobbie Dunn tied for 57th at 251.
The Viking women return to play next week at the Shanico Invitational hosted by Oregon State. It takes place at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Oct. 8-9.
