The fourth round was the last one for the Portland State Vikings men’s tennis team in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, as junior Mitch Somach lost to ninth-seeded Robert Stineman.
The ITA took place over the weekend in Seattle. It started out rough for the Vikings, as they lost seven matches on their first day of play. Sean Sullivan was the only Viking to make it past the first round, but he was quickly beat by the No. 1-seeded Ryan Thatcher.
Somach had first and second round byes in consolation play, and he defeated Stefan Simikic in the third round. However the hopes of Somach advancing past the consolation bracket faded against Stineman. Somach loss in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
The men’s tennis team continues fall action Nov. 4–6 in Eugene at the PNW Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Oregon. The women’s side continues play at the Bulldog Classic starting on Nov. 11 in Fresno, Calif.
