Wrestlers head to NCAA Championships
Senior John Fasana (125 pounds) and junior Jeremy Wilson (184 pounds) left for Iowa City, Iowa yesterday for the NCAA Championships, which will run through Saturday.
Three weeks ago, in the Pac-10 Championships, Fasana, originally from Willamina, Ore., recorded a first-round loss but worked his way up through the consolation bracket and got a 7-1 decision over Oregon’s Shaun Williams (ranked No. 14 nationally) to earn third place.
By placing third, Fasana automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships. Accompanying him at the tourney will be teammate junior Jeremy Wilson (Dayton, Ore.) who had an impressive run at the Pac-10s by placing second. Wilson fell to Oregon All-American Doug Lee (No. 7) by a 6-4 decision in the 184 pound title bout.
On the first day of competition, the 17th-ranked Wilson pinned Boise State’s Cash Edwards (No. 8) in an extra round to earn the opportunity to wrestle for first place. Edwards beat Wilson earlier in the season and has been ranked ahead of him all year in the national polls.
As a team Portland State finished eighth out of ten teams. Arizona State took home the team crown, dethroning 2000 Champion Boise State.
