Soccer team downed in OT 2-1

After scoring a goal in the 85th minute of play, Utah Valley State beat the Vikings 2-1 in overtime Monday, dropping the Vikings to 3-5-1 on the season. Junior forward Salina Karia scored the lone Viking goal in the 35th minute of action to give PSU the lead heading into the half. The Viks play host to rival Oregon State Friday at 5 p.m.

Softball starting exhibition season

The softball team will kick off its exhibition season with a doubleheader against Mt. Hood Community College Saturday, Oct. 1 at Erv Lind Field. The games are set to start at noon and will be new head coach Amy Hayes’ first action at the helm of Portland State. Hayes replaces PSU legend Teri Mariani, who retired last season after 29 years on the Viking bench with a record of 663-581.

XC team in action Saturday

Hoping to make some big improvements, PSU’s cross-country team will compete in the Willamette Invitational Saturday in Salem. Frosh star Jake Hansen and Mallory Gordon should be the go-to stars for the Viks.

Our very own national star

Senior running back Joe Rubin was named the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week and the Sports Network’s National Player of the Week after his 356-yard, five-touchdown performance last Saturday against Northern Colorado. Despite his dominating stats, Rubin owns neither the single game yardage or TD record. Former Viking star Ryan Fuqua gained 393 yards in a 2001 game against Eastern Washington, and in 1976 Jeff Salta rushed for six scores against Eastern Montana.

One division race over

The Chicago White Sox clinched the AL’s Central Division title with a 4-2 win over the hapless Detroit Tigers Thursday. The LA Angels clinched the AL West earlier in the week, leaving only the AL East and Wild Card open. It will be a three-way race for those two spots, with the Yankees and Red Sox battling it out for the East title in a three game weekend series at Fenway Park.
