Ongoing faculty workshops

The Center for Academic Excellence free workshops continue this week with “Understanding Satellite Video Communications,” on Tuesday, March 12 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Later that afternoon will be a “Teaching and Learning with Technology Roundtable,” from 3 to 4:30 p.m. On Thursday March 14, the “Scholarship of Teaching Resource Team,” will meet from 3 to 5 p.m. To register for any of these events call CAE at 503-725-5642.

More free computer classes for faculty.

The Office of Information Technologies will hold more free computer classes for faculty and staff. Interested individuals should reregister through the Office of Human Resources at e-mail address [email protected] or by phone at 503-725-4926. Class offerings in the next several weeks include “Cooking with GQL II,” March 8, 9 a.m. to noon; and “GQL Lite” and “Cooking with GQL I,” March 15, 9 a.m. to noon

Brown bags and education

The Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) Alumni Association hosts lunchtime seminars every Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This week’s seminar is entitled “Maternal Addiction: Making the Case for Integrated Services for Mothers and Babies.” Next Friday, March 15, the seminar is entitled, “The Reason for Living, Inventories in Suicide Assessment.” GSSW provides beverages and cookies. Seminars begin promptly at noon. Cost varies for Alumni Association members, nonmembers, students and retired professionals. Admission is free for GSSW students. Poetry for the people

The Literary Arts Council’s Winter 2002 Readings Series continues with a reading by Kim Addonizio. Addonizio has been a lecturer on both fiction and poetry at various colleges in California. The author of two volumes, she currently lives in San Francisco and is the recipient of a number of awards and fellowships, including a Pushcart Prize in Poetry. The series is sponsored by Portland State’s Literary Arts Council in conjunction with the Center for Excellence in Writing and the Mountain Writers Workshop. The reading will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Room 238 of the Smith Center. Call 503-725-5666 for more information. The reading is free.

Faraway places

A free lecture entitled “When a Foreign Language Is Really Foreign: A Look at Japan” by renowned linguist Dr. Eleanor Jorden will take place Thursday, March 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. Dr. Jorden is a professor emeritus at Cornell University.
