At a meeting last Friday, the Student Fee Committee assigned its members as liaisons to student groups, and member Jil Heimensen was elected as the committee’s vice chair.
However, future decisions may not be official because of an Oregon Administrative Rule concerning committee member enrollment.
The committee learned that because the majority of its members are not enrolled in summer classes, the committee might be unable make decisions concerning finances.
The OAR rule states: “All student members of incidental fee committees and subcommittees thereof shall be students maintaining at least half-time status.”
But at Friday’s meeting, when asked who was enrolled in summer classes, only one committee member raised their hand.
“We are in talks with General Counsel and our OUS sister institutions around their treatment of summer and allocating fees,” said Student Activities and Leadership Assistant Director Domanic Thomas.
Even if the SFC cannot act in an official capacity in accordance with state policy this summer, the committee plans to forge ahead.
“We are kind of held down by this, but by no means will it keep us from getting things done,” said SFC Chair Johnnie Ozimkowski.
The committee can still contact students groups to explain the final outcome of last year’s budgeting process, conduct trainings and hash out hopes and expectations for the coming year, Ozimkowski said.
Before Friday’s meeting, the SFC spent hours receiving information from administrators and staff to prepare the SFC to answer student groups’ questions and address budget concerns.
Student groups can expect initial contact from their liaisons by mid-August.
