After the hard-fought loss at Oregon last week, the Vikings (4-5-1) will be looking to resume normal services on Friday at Utah Valley and again on Sunday against perennial foe Gonzaga. The home match against the Zags at the PCC-Rock Creek soccer complex will be the Viks’ final non-conference matchup before starting Big Sky play.
After goalkeeper Cris Lewis became Portland State’s new leader in career saves, wins and shutouts last month, it is now senior Dolly Enneking’s turn to make her mark in the books as she inches closer to the school’s all-time goals scored record. Enneking has tallied 15 goals in her career, and is just two shy of the record set by Joanna Bowns in 1999.
Junior Frankie Ross, last season’s Big Sky Gold Boot Award winner, is also due for some goals after hitting the net twice already this season. Ross is currently leading the team in shots attempted, with 23 on the season.
In their previous matchup in 2005, Utah Valley needed a double-overtime to upset the Vikings, 2-1. The previous year, the Vikings defeated the Wolverines, 5-1. Defense is a concern for Utah Valley as they have forced only five goals, while conceding 20 in their nine matches this season.
Sunday’s match will be the 13th meeting between the Bulldogs and the Vikings, with Gonzaga holding the series lead at 8-2-2. Portland State will be counting on their physically aggressive style of defending to improve their record against the Bulldogs.
The Viks have accumulated 100 fouls in 10 games this season, and lead their opponents in bookings, 13-6. The series between the Viks and the Zags is Portland State’s longest non-conference rivalry, along with Oregon State.
