A letter from President Bernstine
Dear Portland State University students:
On behalf of the faculty, administrators and staff at Portland State University, welcome to the start of the 2006-07 academic year. We are pleased you are here and we will work hard to make your university experience intellectually rewarding and meaningful.
You made an excellent choice by enrolling at Portland State University, Oregon’s only international urban research university. A key part of your experience involves your work with faculty and your fellow students. I encourage you to be engaged learners – in the classroom, in campus activities, and in the community – to test theories you learn and apply them to real world problems and concerns. The university’s motto, “Let Knowledge Serve the City,” will guide your educational experiences and define you as a PSU student.
This year, Portland State University celebrates its 60th anniversary. In 1946, PSU was formed by a group of visionary leaders who believed that higher education was the key to achieving economic stability for families and for communities. That vision is even more compelling today because we have the data to show that a college education is directly related to economic security. By earning a college degree, research data show that you will earn about 78 percent more than those with only a high school diploma. By 2010, six out of 10 new jobs in Oregon will require a bachelor’s degree. While many students face incredible challenges in pursuing their degrees, it is essential that you keep focused on your goals and make progress toward graduation. If you need help, be sure to ask for it. At Portland State, we are all committed to helping you realize your dreams and reach your goals.
Our founders had a dream of a Portland State that provided students with opportunities and defined by excellence. Portland State University in 2006 is a university known throughout the world for the way teaching and research is connected to the community; it is known for providing students with an international education; it is known for being a sustainable campus, both in operations and throughout the curriculum; and it is known for research linked to the economy and priorities of urban metropolitan communities. In fact, Portland State is a place where opportunity and excellence define our mission, our work, and your success.
Finally, I encourage you to become actively engaged in the life of Portland State University. Lend your talents to a campus club or organization; become involved in student government; attend campus cultural events and athletic games. Wear your PSU colors with pride!
