Screening this weekend at 5th Avenue Cinema is Tim Burton’s Pee-wee’s Big Adventure , a story filled with comedy, love and child-like wonder. The film begins with Pee-wee Herman, who loves his bike more than anything. Pee-wee is devastated when he discovers it has been stolen and sets out on a quest to find it.
Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is a bizarre story. With only the bike on his mind, he visits a psychic who tells him that his bike is hidden in the basement of the Alamo. Pee-wee hitches a ride with Mickey, a fugitive on the run, and embarks on an adventure, meeting a variety of eccentric characters along the way. Once finally reaching the Alamo, Pee-wee discovers to his horror that there is not a basement and his trip was a waste of time.
On his way home, he ends up knocking over a group of bikers’ motorcycles. Fearing for his life, he promptly starts dancing to The Champs song Tequila. Impressing the bikers, he is given a motorcycle which he then crashes, sending him to the hospital. While recovering he sees his bike on T.V. and heads off to the Warner Bros. Studio to get it back.
During a wild chase scene, Pee-wee comes across a burning pet store. Instead of escaping, he saves the animals and is arrested. Brought to the head of the studio, the charges against Pee-wee are dropped in exchange for the rights to the story of his trip across America in search for his bike, which is turned into a James Bond-style film. Having already lived the adventure, Pee-wee cycles off into the sunset.
Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is a bizarre film with an even more insane story. Despite this, the childlike themes of the movie can be enjoyed by anyone, regardless what of age. Everyone should come out to 5th Avenue Cinema and re-experience the childhood magic for themselves.
