Old World carnage

There’s a giant monster on the rampage, demolishing buildings and wreaking havoc on the ancient city of Attica. Large warring parties of Persians are laid to slaughter in a matter of minutes. An Old World orchestra and chamber choir thunders in the background. The camera pans back to reveal a lone warrior standing on a cliff, taking in the bloodshed. No doubt about it–this is a God of War game.

Spotlight Athlete of the week

The Vanguard caught up with freshman utility player Brandi Campos as she rode the bus home from the softball team’s 4-0 victory over the Oregon Ducks Wednesday night. Head coach Amy Hayes considers Campos one of her most versatile players and calls the Roseburg, Ore.

Senior Mandy Hill got the job done in the circle against Oregon Wednesday afternoon, pitching a gritty seven-hit, two-strikeout shutout against the Ducks (13-10) to give the Vikings two wins in a row over the Pac-10.

Pride for all

A small tent adorned with rainbow sheets, pictures of muscled men and pin-up girls sits in the South Park Blocks. A large purple curtain decorates the front of this makeshift display, with a sign that prominently displays “The Closet” hanging from the top. On offense, Rebecca Mercer fuels the Bobcats’ charge. The senior guard is averaging nearly 20 points a game and leads the Big Sky in three-point shots made per contest. Senior forward Krislyn Wallace and sophomore guard Jenny Heringer also rank among the conference leaders in points per game, a perimeter-laden team.

Men’s basketball preview

Eastern Washington head coach Kirk Earlywine called the Vikings, “A freight train going at full speed,” after Portland State’s domination in Montana this past weekend. The Eagles are the only team in the Big Sky, other than Weber State, to defeat the Vikings this season. Portland State will be looking for revenge in the regular season finale after losing in Cheney, Wash, on Dec. 22, 58-57. The Vikings will also be going for their 12th straight Big Sky victory.

Corrections

The Vanguard incorrectly reported how incoming freshmen with low scores on SAT or ACT tests would select the writing classes they plan to take at Portland State in the March 5 article, “Faculty set sights on UNST writing requirements.” If the idea mentioned in the story were enacted, PSU advisors would help students choose which English or Linguistics classes would best suit their writing abilities, according to Hildy Miller, director of writing at PSU. Faculty will not choose the classes for the students, Miller said.

SALP plans to let six students attend an annual student government conference in Washington, D.C., while two student leaders must stay home because of a conflict that arose last week over the way tickets for the trip were purchased.
