Throughout this album, it seems that the Spill Canvas have earnestly tried to under-perform as many worn pop cliches as they could get their hands on. With a musical idiom resembling a devil-spawned half-breed Brand New and White Snake, the Spill Canvas sound like they arrived five years too late to a party that wasn’t all that fun to begin with.

Is late night TV still funny?
In the last week, a bright rocket of hope shot out of late night television land. Leno, Letterman and Conan–along with the other lesser hosts–are now back on air, and, with the exception of Letterman, high up on the comedy trapeze, but without the safety net of writers.
There Will Be Blood
There Will Be Blood is, in all aspects, an amazing piece of cinema. It has jackhammer performances, incendiary writing and is achingly, beautifully filmed. More than a month after seeing it for the first time, I am still puzzling over the various triumphs of Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest work.

Athletic director Torre Chisholm has already overseen the three coaching changes, a Big Sky regular season championship for women’s volleyball and the most buzz surrounding the football program in several decades–all in just eight months on the job.
Editorial: Advice for democracy
Just like Erik Sten’s resignation from the Portland City Council last week, the departures of seven Student Fee Committee members over the course of the last six months here at Portland State is a disservice to those who choose to vote.
Letters
Nathan Hellman is correct with the basic facts of his article on the Student Fee Committee [“Student Flee Committee,” Jan. 8]. What he failed to articulate was how these departures actually affect this very important committee.
Rip City reality check
Three games. Three measly wins. That’s all that separates the Trail Blazers from the top spot in the Western Conference.
Corrections
In Thursday’s debate championship story [“Master debater Gross excels in Bangkok,” Jan. 10], the Vanguard incorrectly stated that Josh Gross was the first student ever to win two specific awards. He was the only student this year to win both awards. The article also incorrectly identified his speech topic, which was about “Harry Potter.
Geezers gone wild!
To get straight to the point, The Bucket List offers nothing more than it advertises: two cancer-stricken old men living it up while learning life lessons about existence and friendship before they die.
