Tales from the crypt

What do 25,000 dead people and 15 of Portland’s finest musical acts have in common? Aside from a mild geographic association, these two unlikely parties will be uniting this Friday for one of the Rose City’s most ambitious recent musical projects.

Happy go stupid

Happy Go Lucky is the story of a happy person. A really happy person. A person so goddamn chipper that, 10 minutes into the film, I started imagining ways to make her suffer. Rarely have I loathed a character as much as I loathe Poppy.

A rough recollection

Retro gamers, your time has come. At least if Capcom has anything to say about it. A lifetime of compassion and activism

More than 50 friends, family and colleagues gathered Tuesday at the Simon Benson House to honor the memory of Heather Hartley, an associate professor of sociology at Portland State who died almost three weeks ago. The room was thick with grief as, one by one, those who knew Hartley best shared their memories.

A man, a guitar and a thesaurus

It’s a good thing John Darnielle knows how to write a story. As the singer and lyricist of acoustic-guitar duo The Mountain Goats, Darnielle has built a career out of songs structured around characters and narrative–not on the strength of his voice.
