$35,000 student event nixed

The Associated Students of Portland State University are cancelling a $30,000 request in student fee funds, after difficulty in organizing a concert to raise voter registration awareness forced the student body to cancel the event.

Loyal to his Park Block roots

James “Jimmy” Miller’s connection with Portland State began nearly 90 years ago as a student at Lincoln High School, which was renamed Lincoln Hall and became the university’s first building in the South Park Blocks.

Miller Foundation gives PSU $25M

Portland State received a $25 million donation aimed at improving sustainability programs Wednesday morning, the largest gift in university history. After a week of intense speculation and swirling rumors, PSU President Wim Wiewel accepted the grant from the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation at a press conference in the Simon Benson House.

PSU switches to new payment system

In a response to a mandate by the State Treasury, Portland State University has moved student accounts over to a new third party payment system called CASHNet. Portland State, along with the rest of the Oregon University System and all state agencies, was mandated by the State Treasury to enhance transaction security and become PCI (Payment Card Industry) compliant by June 30 2008.

It’s impossible to know all the important people at Portland State. But there are a couple essential characters, from the president to the guy who makes sure Vikings fans have something to cheer for, that all PSU students should know about. Meet them here.

Your elected offficials

At Portland State, student government has the daunting and highly important task of representing a student body of now over 27,000 students. With seven members currently making up the Associated Students of Portland State University Executive Staff, each of these students is responsible for representing almost 4,000 Portland State students. And, with that said, we figured it would be important for you to get to know these individuals.

Financial aid 101

Phillip Rodgers, PSU director of student financial aid, says that Portland State students are much better than other students when it comes to properly dealing with financial aid. “Here, students are just on top of it,” Rodgers said. “Students at PSU are pretty good at managing their funds.” Rodgers, having spent time at eight institutions before arriving in the South Park Blocks, could in fact be called a financial aid guru. However, not every Portland State student can be an expert on balancing expenses. Here’s some tips Rodgers gave the Vanguard for those select few students who still need a bit of guidance.

Charming the nation

Ritchie Young laughs over the crackle of the phone as he tells me that he once worked for the Vanguard…then he was fired. “I must not have been very good at it,” he says. Well, he was good enough to start up a very successful band named Loch Lomond, at times consisting of up to 11 members, all of whom have proven talented enough to land an opening slot on a national tour this November with Portland superstars the Decemberists.

The biggest news in Portland State’s history?

New university President Wim Wiewel sent out an invitation Thursday to a press conference scheduled for next Wednesday, September 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. The press conference will be held in the Smith Memorial Union Center Ballroom, located on the third floor, and is slated to shed light on what “might be the biggest news in Portland State’s history.
