Powerless at the plate

While the Vikings hit for a good batting average as a team this season (.274), their Achilles’ heel has been their power numbers. With just one game remaining, they have just 16 home runs as a team–half as many as the Pacific Coast Softball Conference champion, Sacramento State.

Not enough

The Vikings did everything in their power to extend their year into the postseason, but in the end even a dominating sweep of Santa Clara was not enough. Portland State won four games against the Broncos, including three shutout victories and one 10-inning thriller, yet it was rival Sacramento State that claimed the Pacific Coast Softball Conference crown with a sweep of its own.

Letters

Believing in my potential and commitment to serving PSU, I ran for the student body presidency and lost. Despite the results, I remained true and honest to myself and those around me, met many students from all over campus and gained rewarding experiences along the way. Because of all of this, I am walking away as a better person.

Library closed after bomb threat

Portland State evacuated the Branford P. Millar Library yesterday at about 11:15 a.m. because of a threat claiming that a bomb would go off in the library at noon. At noon, after Campus Public Safety had taped off the area around the library and PSU sent warning messages to the campus community through the new PSU Alert system, nothing happened. The building was reopened at 4 p.m. after Public Safety searched the library and found nothing.

In short

The documentary The Price of Sugar will be screened tonight in Smith Memorial Student Union, room 327/328, at 6 p.m.

Iron Man

Summer is here! This is obvious for two reasons. First, I’m sweaty. Second, the first summer blockbuster, Iron Man, just made a shit-ton of money ($98.6 million in the opening weekend, to be exact). Whoopee. Now we can look forward to months of insipid sequels and formulaic cash cows with big dazzling effects.

Save me, Indy!

Unless you’ve spent the last 25 years living under a rock, it’s a safe bet that you grew up as a fan of Indiana Jones. It’s hard not to love the films, given their sharp sense of pulp adventure and the famed archaeologist’s signature everyman charm. Now, with the release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull just over the horizon, what can a good Dr. Jones fan do to satiate the wait?

UPDATE: Library evacuated after anonymous threat, building to stay closed until at least 4 p.m.

The PSU library was evacuated today around 11:15 a.m. after the Portland Police were informed of a possible device that was set to go off at noon. After the threat was received, the library was instantly evacuated by campus safety, the area was taped off, and messages were sent out through PSU Alert, the campus emergency notification system implemented this term. Nothing was found and as of 1 p.m. nothing more had happened. The library will stay closed until at least 4 p.m. No more information is known about the possible “device.”
