Baking pies, striving for memories

This weekend, the Portland State University Theater Department brings us a production of Kathleen Tolan’s play, Memory House, at the Lincoln Hall Studio Theater. This quarter the production is not directed by a graduate student but by PSU professor Julie Akers.

The Lives of Famous Men is a band that’s hungry for fame. And only one year after formation, they’re well on their way to national recognition. Not only has the band done everything themselves, from promoting to networking to booking, they’ve already gone cross-country touring, and could soon find themselves in the national limelight, after ascending the ranks and making it into the top three bands in mtvU’s Campus Invasion Tour contest, a national competition for college bands.

Catching on fast

Nicole Latham was just 8 years old when she first felt the urge to step into the pitcher’s circle at a recreation league softball game. Her father, Len Latham, told Nicole that she was not allowed to try pitching until she mastered a fundamental skill first–catching the ball.

Editorial – OUS: Choose Whitmore

Only Wim Wiewel and Jon Whitmore appear interested, knowledgeable and qualified enough to become the next Portland State president. Though Whitmore lacks the charisma we would like to see in a president, he is the best choice for our burdened university.

Now this is what I call a step in the right direction [“White Studies class looks at racism,” April 8]. This is indeed a dangerous college course, as it will cause those enrolled in it to take a hard look at America from the standpoint of non-white Americans. Although what they experience will be disturbing, they will experience positive growth. Good luck with the program.

Women’s tennis preview

The surprising Vikings will be tested against a veteran Bobcat team featuring one of the best players in the Big Sky Conference in sophomore Laura Villegas, who is 9-1 on the season.

Men’s tennis preview

The Vikings will look to get back on track in the Big Sky Conference. After three matches in two days, the Vikings return home to face off against conference rival Northern Arizona. The Lumberjacks are led by sophomore Jacob Tracy, whose 8-10 record is tops on the team.

Women’s golf preview

Playing in their final tune-up before the Big Sky Championships next week, the Vikings will face a stiff tournament field this weekend, featuring several of the nation’s premier teams. Expect big things from junior Kayla Morinaga, who seems to play her best golf late in the season.
