Chelsea Clinton set to visit campus Saturday

Chelsea Clinton, daughter of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, will visit campus this Saturday to give a talk and promote her mother’s campaign.

She is scheduled to speak on the subject “Our Economy, Our Future” from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in the Smith Memorial Student Union Browsing Library. The Portland State stop is the final of three slated Oregon visits for Chelsea Clinton on April 12. The first will be the Oregon Democratic Convention in Eugene, and the other will be at Oregon State University.

The event is free and open to the public, but attendees should register at www.hillaryclinton.com/psu.

Chelsea is the third Clinton to visit Oregon in the last two weeks, after President Bill Clinton came through at the end of March and Sen. Hillary Clinton visited last weekend. The Oregon Primary will be held May 20.

Jesse Cornett, assistant to the president of government relations, said Chelsea’s visit will be a community event where anyone can come out and ask questions of the former first daughter.

“It’s a true kickoff for the university for the campaign year,” he said.

RecycleMania heads to the home stretch

RecycleMania is coming to a close, and Portland State is currently ranked 21st out of 84 colleges participating in the waste minimization category. Next week will mark the end of the intercollegiate recycling competition for this year, which has over 400 schools participating in various categories, such as measuring waste and recycling trends.

The average PSU participant generated 3.74 pounds of waste during week nine of the competition, down from the previous week’s average of 4.43 pounds per person. Last year, the average PSU participant generated 5.67 pounds of waste during week nine of RecycleMania and finished 13th overall in Waste Minimization.

In the Per Capita Classic, which measures the amount of material recycled by a school, PSU participants averaged 0.85 pounds per person during week nine, a slight decrease from the week-eight average of 0.96 pounds per person. PSU is currently ranked 105th out of 167 schools in that category.
