For many in our community, the holidays are not a festive time of year but a period of deep anxiety and distress. Thankfully, there are many resources for those people in need of a little help this season. But with the higher demand during these frigid winter months, many of the organizations that provide essential services to the disadvantaged become overwhelmed. These organizations rely on the time and effort of volunteers and can always use an extra helping hand.
PSU Kickboxing Club
In the Portland State Kickboxing Club, students bring an assortment of martial arts disciplines together as they build confidence and learn self-defense. The group focuses mainly on muay thai and boxing but also works in aspects of capoeira, tae kwon do, kung fu and krav maga.
Get back to nature with the Outdoor Program
This month will be a busy one for the Outdoor Program at Portland State. The agenda in the coming weeks includes whitewater kayaking, a Columbia Gorge day hike, a service trip to Opal Creek, a three-day rock climbing seminar and a weekend camping trip at Silver Falls. It’s a tremendous opportunity for students and community members alike to enjoy the natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest at an affordable rate.
Rowing in sync with the PSU crew
The Portland State crew heads out onto the water as the sun rises over downtown Portland. The team practices at least four days a week, rain or shine. They are currently getting ready for upcoming events at Oaks Park and the Portland Boathouse.
Namaste!
Yoga is an activity that can center your entire day. Whether you are interested in an intense strength session or a long, relaxing session, the Academic and Student Rec Center has you covered. Many different styles of yoga are offered there, from a variety of certified instructors who are passionate about yoga and its contribution to a person’s well-being.
Promote a healthy lifestyle
Portland State has implemented a series of women-only Group X classes this fall at the Academic and Student Rec Center. This comes as a result of high demand from students in prior terms. The new classes supplement the regularly scheduled classes, adding some extra options for women who would like to participate.
Get out of the city this fall
The Outdoor Program here at Portland State is one way for urban dwellers to get out of the city and experience the wonderful wilderness of the Northwest. With activities for any skill level, the Outdoor Program allows PSU students to escape into nature.
