Recycling roundup
Known for its recycling, and sustainability in general, Portland State has contributed to keeping the environment clean for decades. In 1969, PSU initiated a “new multi-material recycling service through student services,” according PSU’s Sustainability Web site.
Honoring Portland firefighters
In the early morning of June 26, 1911, a fire alarm sounded. An oil pump threw a spark that ignited the Union Oil distributing plant on Southeast Salmon Street and Water Avenue.
Vet benefits
Three thousand troops from the Oregon National Guard’s 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team will arrive from Afghanistan this spring. This surge of homebound troops will likely put an increase in the number of veterans attending Oregon University System schools.
Fledgling transgender student group
“I want to let people know there will be a safe place on campus that they can go to, that they are experiencing the same problems, and we can come together and help each other,” sophomore Amaya Taína said with regard to the transgender community at PSU.
Sustainability director finalists
Portland State hosted two candidates for the PSU Center for Sustainable Processes and Practices director position last Friday, Feb. 19 and Monday, Feb. 22.
Diners turned away
Both Food For Thought Café and Subway in the Smith Memorial Student Union had to turn away students this week who tried to pay for food using money from their meal plans.
