Portland Timbers just miss the playoffs after draws against D.C. United and Real Salt Lake

In their penultimate game of the season, the Portland Timbers drew 1-1 at D.C. United Wednesday, but still maintained a mathematical chance of making it to the Major League Soccer playoffs.

However, the Timbers were knocked out of playoff contention after the New York Red Bulls 1-0 win over Philadelphia in their final match on Thursday. With only pride to play for in the last game, the Timbers scored an injury time equalizer in a 1-1 tie at Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

The Portland State women’s soccer team had a rough start to their home campaign in the Big Sky Conference this past weekend. Despite having more chances, the Vikings lost 0-1 to Northern Colorado on Friday at Hillsboro Stadium and drew 1-1 against Northern Arizona at home on Sunday.

Timbers host Dynamo on Friday in fight for playoff spot

The Portland Timbers will play their last home game of the season at Jeld-Wen Field against the Houston Dynamo on Friday in a match that may decide which team makes it to the Major League Soccer playoffs. Portland and Houston are among four teams vying for the last two playoff spots.

In their first season in the MLS, the Timbers’ playoff destiny is in their own hands. They will qualify for the playoffs if they win all of their remaining three matches. However, two of the three games are away from home and two games are against teams also vying for a playoff spot.

The Portland State women’s soccer team won their game against Eastern Washington 1-0 in Cheney, Wash., on Friday and came from behind in double-overtime for a 2-2 draw against Montana in Missoula, Mont. on Sunday in two Big Sky conference regular season away games.

The Portland State women’s soccer team will look to extend their stay on the top of the Big Sky Conference table when they play Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash., on Friday and Montana in Missoula, Mont., on Sunday.

“Eastern Washington and Montana are two tough opponents who play their best at home. I expect physical, hard-fought matches heading into this weekend,” head coach Laura Schott said.

The Portland State women’s soccer team will begin their 2011 Big Sky regular season campaign against Sacramento State in Sacramento, Calif., on Friday. This game will be the first among seven regular season conference games. The top four teams in the conference will then make it to the Big Sky semi-finals.

The Portland State women’s soccer team began training for the upcoming 2011 regular season this week. The team is coming off an impressive spring off-season (4-1-1) and a record breaking 2010 Big Sky regular season (5-2-0), which ended with them finishing second. The team practices once or twice a day at the Peter W. Stott recreation field.

The Portland Timbers lost 2-3 in heartbreaking fashion to archrival Seattle Sounders at Jeld-Wen Field on Sunday afternoon. This was the Timbers’ seventh MLS match without a win, their fourth successive loss in all competition and their ninth game overall without a win. With this result, the Timbers are now 9-5-3 in the MLS in 2011 and are second from the bottom in the Western Conference.

Timbers lose 0-4 to FC Dallas over weekend

The Portland Timbers extended their MLS winless streak to five games as they were humbled 0-4 by FC Dallas in Frisco, Texas, on Saturday evening. Dallas thoroughly dominated the Timbers, scoring two goals in each half, as Portland (5-7-3, 18 points) now drops to seventh place in the tightly-contested Western Conference. Dallas (9-4-4, 31 points) leapt to the second spot following the win.
