Has anyone noticed that music seems to have gotten weirder in the last few years? This is by no means a complaint, merely an observation. In keeping with the trend started with bands like Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance and, of course, the Flaming Lips, Yeasayer’s Odd Blood is a wild trip into the strange, the psychedelic and, ultimately, the melodic.

Keeping it Superfresh!
Portland is all about community and, in the local music scene, nothing has reflected this more than Supernature, a monthly event at Rotture focusing on local dance acts. Now, following a highly successful festival last summer, local electronic music aficionado and event planner Manny Reyes will be teaming up with a bundle of local talent to bring us Superfresh!
Storms a brewin’
For just a two-piece band, Brainstorm packs an incredible punch with their music. The duo, comprised of musicians Adam Baz and Patrick Phillips, has a unique feel in their music, combining playful melodies with erratic percussion for a high-energy experience that will appeal to a wide range of listeners. A little bit art rock and all sorts of rock and roll, Brainstorm is set on course to conquer Portland with their unstoppable charisma and vast amount of talent.
Failing at fringe
Fringe is a show that could easily be compared to the X-Files, but in this case the plot lines seem more futuristic and technology driven. Three main characters move the story along—Peter Bishop, his father Dr. Walter Bishop and FBI agent Olivia Dunham.
Failure to pick up steam
It’s a shame when a band puts out an album with a strong start and a weak follow-through and finish. Morningbell is very guilty of this musical crime, making their album Sincerely, Severely a mediocre artistic attempt.

Symphony of sound
“In a perfect world, everyone would be an artist, and no one would sign their work.”
Space age music from SoCal
They describe their sound as psychedelic. Mostly it’s just kind of weird, but Globes on Remote might be on to something.
Theater goes online
Transitions into television are frequent from film, books and, well, reality. A scarcer situation is theater becoming television.
Tight pants and hot bass
These days, dance music can be very hit or miss, due in part to an increased accessibility to music software and programs that make it easy for any average individual to turn their laptop into a beat machine.
Get excited for: Lucky Madison
This weekend I got shut down for two shows I had intended on covering. One of them got moved and the other one just didn’t pan out. Thankfully, this gave me the opportunity to check out a band from local label Lucky Madison and make some plans to see more of their artists.
