Rose City Rollers ready for new year

In less than two weeks’ time, the thundering rumble of the roller derby will slam back into the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. On Jan. 19 at 5:45 p.m., the Heartless Heathers will take on the Guns N Rollers in the first official bout of the Rose City Rollers intra-league season. The matchup will be immediately followed by a second full-length bout between the High Rollers and the Break Neck Betties. It will be a night of raffles, drummers, T-shirt cannons and just a little good old-fashioned violence.

Victory lap for women’s national soccer team coming to Jeld-Wen

Soccer rolls into Portland on Wednesday, Nov. 28 as the U.S. women’s national team squares off against the Republic of Ireland in the sixth game of its fan tribute tour. This will be the first time the two teams have played since 2008, when the U.S. beat Ireland 2-0 at Toyota Park in Illinois. The team has been on tour since Sept. 1.

Amber Rozcicha has covered a lot of ground as a Viking. She came to Portland from Newberg, Ore. in 2009 and immediately began making her mark. Rozcicha excelled at 800 meters, finishing with a time of 2 minutes, 16.73 seconds at the University of Washington Indoor Preview in her freshman season, and was the Vikings’ top finisher in three races for the cross country team that year. Her best long distance result was a 13th place showing at the 4,800-meter Pre’s Trail Run event.

Jim Dunn
(baseball, 1977–79)

Jim Dunn began his baseball career at Portland State in 1977, when his father, Jack Dunn, was coach. His career at PSU spanned three seasons, from 1977–79. Dunn stole a record-setting 26 bases in 1979 and received All-NorPAC honors in 1978 and 1979. He was named the team’s Outstanding Pitcher in 1978 and won a Gold Glove award in 1979. Dunn is also PSU’s all-time leading hitter with a .385 batting average. He played professionally for the San Francisco Giants after graduation. His son, Ryan Dunn, was recently drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fall sports leagues set to begin

Fall is a time for dead leaves, pumpkins and sports—Underdog Sports, that is. It’s time to pull on those bowling shoes or snatch up your lucky headband: The first registration deadlines are approaching fast. Whether you’re on your own or have a team, Underdog Sports features coed divisions for bowling, flag football, volleyball, dodgeball and futsal (indoor soccer). And don’t worry if it’s your first time, they offer both “softcore” leagues for the newbies and “midcore” leagues for players that have been around.

Softball prepares for spring season and the first ever Big Sky softball championship

This month, Portland State’s softball team is preparing for the spring season. They’ve played four exhibition games so far and have two more to go. This is the first year that the softball team will be competing in the Big Sky Conference, as it’s the first year the conference is sponsoring a softball championship, though this is not the first time the Vikings softball team has played for a championship title.
