Burnside Bridge to close

The newly reopened Burnside Bridge, currently host to heavy construction as a general contractor works to replace a worn-out lift mechanism, will close again from Oct. 26 to 29, according to the Multnomah County public relations office.

The bridge, which reopened last weekend, will be closed to vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian access starting at 8 p.m. Friday and continuing until 6 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 29. Advanced American Diving Services, Inc., the general contractor working on the bridge, was unable to complete the work as planned due to vehicular interference.

The bridge had been previously closed to vehicular access at night and during parts of the day since Oct. 12.

A Multnomah County press release states that river traffic will not be affected by the closure.

TriMet bus routes 12, 19 and 20 will cross the Willamette River using the Morrison Bridge during the full closure. There are no further closures scheduled as of press time.

The mechanism replacement is part of a two-year, $9 million project to update several Portland bridges maintained by Multnomah County. The closure this weekend should be the last of the traffic-delaying construction on the Burnside Bridge, county officials said.
