Fall in Portland is a beautiful thing. The air is crisp, the trees are blushing, the returning rain is momentarily regarded as pleasant and the sun, while setting a little earlier each night, still lingers long enough for an after-dinner stroll.
Victory on the road
The Portland State women’s soccer team beat North Dakota 3-1 to earn their first conference victory of the season Sunday, recovering from their loss to the University of Northern Colorado last week. This evened up their conference record to 1-1.
Intramurals are coming
You’re still trying to stay in shape, and not only do you not have the time, what with the part time job, full time school schedule, and a jam-packed social calendar, but maybe something about the gym environment turns you off and club sports seem too competitive. We share a similar dilemma. I have been struggling to find solutions. As inches grow on my beltline, lately it seems I’m ruled by fear, trepidation, until now.
Sports: Upcoming
A list of upcoming sports events.
Jekyll at kickoff, Hyde after halftime
Portland State football opened conference play on Saturday against Big Sky newcomer Southern Utah at Jeld-Wen Field. Prior to the game against the Thunderbirds, the Vikings had already played three non-conference matchups.
New coach, new season
New cross country head coach Jonathan Marcus has had success in his first two meets at Portland State, and he hopes it continues through his first season as a Viking.
The cross country team has raced at meets in Portland and Seattle so far this season, with a number of athletes reaching personal bests. The women are led by senior Amber Rozcicha, who finished eighth in the Pier Park Invitational and 10th at the Sundodger Invitational.
A new season of Viking volleyball
Ahead in conference standings, the Portland State women’s volleyball team prepares to host its first conference match in the Park Blocks this week. With nearly a full roster of returners, the team’s experience is paying off. The Vikings are currently 8-7 overall and 4-0 in conference.
To keep the momentum at home and throughout the season, head coach Michael Seemann said that serving is the key to wins.
NFL fail
The fans of the NFL are voracious. The Oakland Raiders—who haven’t made the post-season since their Super Bowl loss to the Bucs and epically busted on 2007 first-round draft pick JaMarcus Russell—have legions of fans who still mob the Oakland Coliseum.
Their tenacity isn’t an anomaly. Across the country, the die-hards for the Miami Dolphins are still living in the glory days of Marino and currently have a quarterback that recently admitted he doesn’t know which teams go in which division.

Autumn ambling
Fall in Portland is a beautiful thing. The air is crisp, the trees are blushing, the returning rain is momentarily regarded as pleasant and the sun, while setting a little earlier each night, still lingers long enough for an after-dinner stroll. In order to take advantage of this seasonal magic hour, the Academic and Student Rec Center is once again hosting Walktober, its month-long pedestrian promotional event that celebrates October as National Walking Month.
