The gates broke. Hooves pounded the dirt. Six jockeys bounced on the backs of six horses, their colors mixing and overlapping, an argyle rainbow of green and yellow, black and purple, blue and red. For 15.78 seconds the crowd was jumping and hollering.

Els wins Open Championship
We often use hyperbole to sell sports. A close game characterized by defense becomes a dogfight; a late-round playoff matchup between the top seeds is a war. Battle references occur more frequently during sports programming than sports references at political rallies.
Between the Horns: Hot streak
After witnessing a disappointing start this season, I was surprised to watch the Oakland Athletics crush both the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox. But after seeing them sweep the New York Yankees, I’m simply astonished. How does a team with the worst total batting average in Major League Baseball beat three hitting juggernauts in one month?

Between the Horns: The midway mark
It’s tough to be a Mariners fan this year. Their shining-star pitcher and 2010 Cy Young Award winner, “King” Félix Hernández, may keep the opposing team run count to a minimum, but their lackluster offense continually fails to capitalize on it.
Mosquera returns, Timbers lose
The Timbers continued their winless away game streak when they lost 3-0 to Real Salt Lake in Sandy, Utah on Saturday, despite the return of suspended defender Hanyer Mosquera.
Snorkeling, hiking and climbing
The Portland State Outdoor Program has big plans this summer, and they’re starting quickly with three trips planned in July.
